Psychotherapy in Bath
Individual psychotherapy for adults in Bath and online, offering a warm, thoughtful space to explore what's hapening in your life.
People come to psychotherapy for many different reasons. You may be experiencing anxiety, low mood, difficulties in your relationships, or struggling with the impact of experiences from your past. You might be going through a period of change or loss, finding yourself repeating patterns that you would like to understand, or simply have a sense that something in your life does not feel right.
You don't need to have a diagnosis or be in crisis to come to therapy. Sometimes it can be difficult to identify exactly what is wrong; therapy can provide the time and space to begin making sense of this.
How can psychotherapy help?
Psychotherapy offers a confidential space in which you can talk openly about yourself and your experiences without judgement.
Together we can explore what is happening in your life now, as well as considering how earlier experiences and relationships may influence the way you think, feel and relate to other people today.
Greater understanding can help you recognise patterns that may no longer be helpful and create the possibility of responding differently. Therapy isn't about somebody else telling you what you should do. My role is to help you think, explore and understand yourself in a way that can lead to meaningful and lasting change.
How I work
My training is in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy. This means I don't use one particular model or technique with everyone. Instead, I draw on a range of psychotherapeutic approaches and adapt the way we work to you as an individual.
The relationship between therapist and client is an important part of psychotherapy. I aim to offer a warm, thoughtful and non-judgemental space where you can feel able to talk about things that may be difficult to discuss elsewhere.
At times our work may focus primarily on something happening in your life now. At other times it may involve looking more closely at your past and understanding how previous experiences continue to affect you in the present.
Where appropriate, we may also consider whether approaches such as EMDR could be helpful alongside psychotherapy.
What can I bring to therapy?
You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to talk about.
I work with adults experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including:
- anxiety and persistent worry
- depression and low mood
- trauma and difficult past experiences
- relationship and attachment difficulties
- low self-esteem and self-confidence
- loss, bereavement and significant life changes
- stress and feeling overwhelmed
- difficulties connected with ADHD and neurodiversity
- the emotional impact of living with a long-term health condition
- feeling stuck or wanting to understand yourself better
These categories are not exhaustive. People and their experiences rarely fit neatly into a list, so you are welcome to contact me if you are unsure whether what you are experiencing is something we could work with.
Short and longer-term psychotherapy
There isn't a set length of time that everyone needs to be in therapy.
Some people come with a particular issue they would like to focus on and find that a shorter period of therapy is helpful. Others want to explore more longstanding difficulties or patterns and choose to work for longer.
We can think about this together and review how the therapy is progressing as our work develops.
Your first session
The first session is an opportunity for us to begin thinking about what has brought you to therapy and what you would like to be different.
I'll ask you some questions about what is happening for you now and about relevant aspects of your history. You will also have the opportunity to ask me questions about therapy and the way I work.
Importantly, the first session also gives you an opportunity to get a sense of me. Finding a therapist with whom you feel comfortable is important, and there is no expectation that you need to decide in advance whether you want to undertake longer-term therapy.
Starting psychotherapy
I offer psychotherapy to adults aged 18 and over, both in person in Bath and online.
If you would like to arrange an initial session, or would like to ask whether I may be able to help with what you are experiencing, please get in touch.
